minor praxis lab
Minor Praxis Lab is a research program, led by Dr. Tim Barlott, at the University of Alberta. Minor Praxis Lab is focused on developing socially responsive theories and practices that foster community connection, belonging, and health and wellness, particularly among those who are structurally marginalized.
what is praxis?
Praxis is the continuous interplay of theory (how we conceptualize or make sense of things) and practice (what we do, actions), where theory shapes everyday practices and everyday practices in turn shapes theorizing. Theory, in this sense, is not abstract or simply applied, but is interconnected with and emergent within situations.
A minor praxis begins at the edges rather than the centre.
What we call minor is often treated as a variation, deviation, or somehow lesser than what counts as normal, dominant, or established. Yet it is in these marginal spaces, away from major theories and standardized practices, that meaningful transformation takes shape. Minor praxis is about collectively doing what we can, with what we have, in the ordinary and constrained conditions of everyday life.
Within health and human services, minor praxis involves collaboratively generating small but meaningful shifts in how we relate, care, and act.
